1. Describe a skill you learned from an older person
You should say: what the skill is, who taught you, how you learned it, and explain why it matters to you.
Sample answer (Band 7.5+)
I'd like to talk about how my grandmother taught me to cook her signature braised pork. I started watching her in the kitchen when I was about ten, mostly because the smell would pull me out of my room. She never used a recipe — everything was measured by eye — so I had to pay close attention and ask a lot of questions. What I value most isn't the dish itself; it's the patience she modelled and the sense of family history I get every time I make it for friends.
2. Describe a piece of technology you find useful (but not your phone)
You should say: what it is, how often you use it, what you use it for, and explain why it is useful.
Sample answer (Band 7.5+)
I'd pick my noise-cancelling headphones. I use them almost every weekday, usually for two or three hours at a stretch when I'm working from a café. They let me focus in noisy environments and they've genuinely changed how productive I can be outside the office. The other reason I love them is for long flights — the constant engine drone disappears the moment I put them on, which makes a huge difference to how rested I feel when I land.
3. Describe a time you helped a stranger
You should say: when it happened, who the person was, how you helped them, and how you felt afterwards.
Sample answer (Band 7.5+)
A couple of months ago I was on the metro when a tourist next to me looked completely lost — she was holding a paper map upside down. I offered to help in English, and it turned out she was trying to reach the Bund but had taken the wrong line. I walked her to the right platform and wrote the station name in Chinese on her phone so she could show it to staff if she got stuck again. It was a small thing, but she thanked me very warmly, and I left the station feeling unexpectedly good about my day.
4. Describe a book you would like to read again
You should say: what the book is, when you first read it, what it is about, and explain why you want to read it again.
Sample answer (Band 7.5+)
The book I'd choose is Sapiens by Yuval Noah Harari. I read it for the first time about three years ago when I was commuting a lot, and I remember being struck by how it reframes ordinary things like money and religion as shared stories. I want to read it again because I rushed through parts of it the first time, and I'm curious whether the arguments hold up now that I have more context from other history books.
5. Describe a piece of good news you received online
You should say: what the news was, when you received it, how you received it, and explain how you felt about it.
Sample answer (Band 7.5+)
Earlier this year I got an email saying I'd been accepted into a part-time master's programme I'd applied for almost on a whim. I was in the middle of a normal workday when the notification popped up, and I had to read it twice before it sank in. I called my partner immediately, and we celebrated that evening with takeaway and a bottle of wine. It mattered to me because it confirmed that the late nights I'd put into the application were worth it.
6. Describe a long walk you enjoyed
You should say: where you went, who you were with, what you saw, and explain why you enjoyed it.
Sample answer (Band 7.5+)
Last autumn I walked a section of the West Lake loop in Hangzhou with two close friends. We started early to avoid the crowds, and the lake was so still you could see the reflection of the pagodas on the far shore. We talked the whole way — about work, about old classmates, about absolutely nothing — and stopped halfway for noodles at a tiny shop one of them remembered from years ago. What made it special wasn't the scenery so much as the rare feeling of having time, with no phone calls and no agenda.
